Choosing tyres for 16 and 20 inch wheels
Sizing conventions, pressure ranges and puncture protection for compact wheels.

Step 1
Read the ISO size, not the inch size
Small-wheel sizing is inconsistent between manufacturers. The ISO/ETRTO number moulded into the sidewall — for example 40-406 or 35-349 — is the only reliable reference. Match the second number exactly to your rim.
Step 2
Run higher pressure than you expect
A small wheel deflects more per rotation, so folding bikes typically run 4.5 to 6.5 bar depending on tyre width and rider weight. Check the sidewall maximum and stay within it.
Step 3
Prioritise puncture belts
Compact wheels rotate faster and pick up more debris per kilometre than 700c wheels. A reinforced belt adds rolling weight but pays for itself in avoided roadside repairs.
