Servicing a folding hinge and clamp

Torque, play checks and lubrication for the joint your whole bike depends on.

Time:
5 min

Step 1

Check for play monthly

Fold and unfold the bike, then grip the bars and push laterally with the clamp closed. Any perceptible knock at the hinge means the clamp needs adjusting or the bushings are worn.

Step 2

Adjust the clamp, not the lever

Most clamps adjust via a knurled nut on the threaded post. Tighten in quarter turns until the lever closes firmly with a positive over-centre snap and no play remains. If the lever needs more force than one hand can apply, back it off.

Step 3

Lubricate sparingly

A drop of light machine oil on the hinge pin is enough. Avoid heavy grease on clamp faces — it reduces the friction the joint relies on to stay closed.
